Out and About: Philadelphia

In Philadelphia, Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson reign supreme.  From statues, emblems on historical buildings and namesake museums, history buffs will be on cloud nine when visiting one of the oldest cities in the US.  We walked our way through downtown, starting with the day at Reading Terminal, a giant food hall that is the size of 1 city block.  Pick up a map at the entrance so you can easily find the stalls you want to visit.  It was quite crowded and as a result, I wasn’t able to take many photos with so many people around.

We shared a pork sandwich at Tommy Dinici’s, picked up a couple of delicious cookies at Famous 4th Street Cookie Co, watched fresh canoli’s being filled at Termini Brothers Italian bakery and meandered around each aisle.   I especially loved the Cookbook shop and Contessa’s French linens which was loaded with beautiful linens from Provence.  I can’t wait to go back when BEILER’S BAKERY is open so I can try their famous sticky buns.  (They are open limited hours so check in advance)

We made our way to Independence & Congress Hall and got a peak at the Liberty Bell from the outside.  The line to see it up close & personal was pretty long so we skipped that to look at it through the viewing window.  We continued down Philadelphia’s main drag, Market Street and past a couple cute Beer Gardens.  I will definitely stop by on my next trip.

Franklin Fountain, the creator of the root beer float, was our last stop of the afternoon.  As you can see in the above image, the line was out the door and down the block.   Therefore, we skipped Franklin Fountain for a trip down candy memory lane at Shane’s Confectionary.  The US’s oldest candy shoppe founded in 1911 isn’t just adorable but also makes one of the BEST chocolate milk shakes I have EVER had!  I highly recommend the Thomas Jefferson!  Can’t wait to return to Philadelphia and explore some more of this great city.  I’ll be posting images from the candy shop soon!
